POLLENSA, a genuine tapas tourFor many years lots of areas and municipalities have organised gastronomic tapas tours and reaped success. The spanish call it “ir de tapas” or “de tapeo”. It’s a much loved and ingrained spanish custom and for many, a traditional experience wheretheycan share a pleasant time eating, talking and laughing together with friends. The tapas tour mixes together the concept of eating, with that of socialising, and its for this reason that “tapear” has converted itself, also for those visiting Spain, into an unavoidable activity.
A few weeks ago, Pollença presented us with its own “tapas tour”; the ”Ruta Tapas Route” a name with international appeal and not without glamour. While the tapas have different regional patterns and customs throughout the Spanish territory, the Pollensa proposal brings all of these factors together: the sophistication of the miniature cuisine, the Andalusian tapas, cold or hot cooked and served in earthenware, the Basque or Navarre pintxos and “montadito” which is any one or two ingredients mounted on bread and more. While tradition dictates eating standing up, Pollensa offers wonderful terraces where one can sit and watch life go by while enjoying a hearty "frit" or a sophisticated montadito of marinated salmon and “gulas” with truffle accompanied by a “Callet,” a rioja, or an ice cold beer.
As a novelty, Ruta Tapas Route organizes package tours with bus transportation and a guide that explains the history of the town and the cultural visits that can also be made, en route. Thus, the experience is complete, cultural, tourist and equally social, also because participation among locals is absolute.
Eleven strategically located establishments have joined the trail in Pollença and dominate every town square: l'Almoina, Ca les Munnares, the main square, the small square of Sant Jordi and the gardens of the Convent, in addition to the Monument and Via Roma.
The participating properties are easily recognizable because they are all identified with the logo and RTR and these are: Tavern, Bar Alhambra, Ca'n Moixet (Spanish cafe), La Birreria, LaPlaceta, El 1550, Bar Avenida, Grill Spira, Cafetería Monument, Bar Sadanar and the Xicra café.
Those interested can sample the delicious tapas every Thursday, from 19.00. Participating locations offer two skewers, or a single tapa, plus a Zurito of wine, beer or soda at the same price.
