Wine and Wineries
Wine making is a family affair in Mallorca. For generations the spirit of wine making has been passed on in several Mallorcan wineries. It was the Romans that brought the first vines to the island in the year 123 BC, along with their vine-growing and winemaking arts, activities that have become a traditional part of island culture and currently play an important supporting role in the economy, producing of some of the finest wines on the market.
Much of Mallorca is suitable for vine-growing, although the best known wines are produced in three areas: Binissalem, the best known one; Pla & Llevant and the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains, where the microclimate created by the mountains makes the production of this region distinctive to this area.
The wine making process of many of the Mallorcan vineyards has advanced significantly over the last few years, and most vineyards employ the latest technology with stainless steel installations and storage tanks; sophisticated refrigeration and temperature control for the fermentation process, and maturing of the wine in oak barrels.
A quality standard was introduced by the Balearic Councilor for Agriculture and Fisheries in 2007, which can only be used by wines grown, produced and bottled in Mallorca and the ‘Denominación de Origen’the designation that guarantees the quality of Mallorcan wines.
